Virtuoso is a cross platform universal server that provides virtual database, XML database, SQL database and Web application server functionality. It integrates with existing IS infrastructure and supports strategic Internet, Web and data access standards (actual and de facto) including Microsoft .NET and the Mono Open Source variant, J2EE, XML Web Services (SOAP, WSDL, WS-Security, UDDI), XML, XPATH, XQuery, XSL-T, WebDav, HTTP, SMTP, LDAP, POP3, SQL-92, ODBC, JDBC and OLE-DB.

New Features in version 3.5 include:

• Web Service Platform:
  • WS-Policy general purpose model and corresponding syntax for describing and communicating Web Service policies. Used in conjunction with WS-Trust and WS-Reliable Messaging.
• XML Database:
  • XML document storage compressed format for storing XML fragments in xmltype columns
  • SQLX support for creating XML trees from standard relational queries.
• Virtual Database:
  • Tables may be assigned a policy function for adding predicates dynamically to limiting the rows that a user may view or update
  • Improved SQL optimisation statistics gathering from remote data sources.
• Object-relational Database:
  • Row Level Security provides Access Control Lists at the row level.
  • Enhanced regular expression support
  • Any view can be updated by specifying an instead of update trigger for it.
• Content Replication and Synchronisation:
  • SyncML support for synchronising data collections between two devices.
• Data Access:
  • JDBC 3.5 driver XA support via the standard javax extensions.
