Virtualisation software allowing a single server to run multiple server or desktop operating systems.

Red Hat® Virtualization (formerly Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization) is a complete infrastructure solution for virtualised servers and workstations.
Built on the powerful Red Hat Enterprise Linux® platform, Red Hat Virtualization provides agility, security, reliability and scalability for virtualized, resource-intensive workloads. There are three core components to a Red Hat Virtualization environment:

  • Red Hat Virtualization Manager: A server that manages and provides access to the resources in the environment. This server can be a physical machine or a virtual machine. Moreover, the Manager can be set up as a virtual machine on a host in an environment that the Manager itself manages. This setup is known as a self-hosted engine setup.
  • Storage: Storage is used to store the data associated with virtual machines in the environment such as the virtual machines themselves and ISO files that can be used to install operating systems or other software on those virtual machines. Storage can be implemented on several storage types, including NFS, iSCSI, GlusterFS and Fibre Channel.
  • Hosts: Hosts are servers that provide the processing capabilities and memory resources used to run virtual machines. In Red Hat Virtualization, servers running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 or a minimal operating system specifically designed to operate as a host in Red Hat Virtualization environments known as the Red Hat Virtualization Host can be used as hosts.

Key Features:

  • Centralised management: Red Hat Virtualization Manager provides a centralised management system with a search-driven graphical interface. A system dashboard provides access to detailed information, including a global-use overview of central processing units (CPUs), memory and storage host resources.A self-hosted engine enables built-in high availability for Red Hat Virtualisation Manager, which is deployed as a virtual appliance.
  • Security and hardening: Secure virtualization (sVirt) and Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) technologies—both inherited from Red Hat Enterprise Linux—are incorporated to secure and harden the hypervisor
against attacks aimed at the host or virtual machines (VMs).
  • Automation and integration: Red Hat CloudForms integrates with Red Hat Virtualization to automate and orchestrate virtual events and provide reporting, chargeback, self-service portals and compliance enforcement. Integrates with OpenStack Glance and Neutron to ease traditional workload migration to private clouds—or to design applications that span virtual and private cloud environments.Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) allows Red Hat Virtualization Manager to integrate with third-party monitoring systems.
  • Migrate from other platforms: Red Hat Virtualization Manager—or a command-line tool—can help migrate workloads from VMware vCenter to Red Hat Virtualization.
