AutoCAD - Features

With AutoCAD users can create single drawings as well as deliver an entire set of coordinated drawings. Productivity features like table objects and enhanced tool palettes simplify drafting tasks and the new Sheet Set Manager helps users create, manag and share entire sheet sets.

New features in version 2007 include:

Create the design you or your client wants.

  • Solid and Surface Modelling - The new solids and surface tools make it easy to create solid and surface models in AutoCAD software. Creation and editing of surfaces (as opposed to mesh objects) has been added, and you can now create solid objects that have faces defined by more complex surfaces. And to enhance usability, the redesigned user interface uses a single environment for creating both solids and surfaces. When you use solids in AutoCAD, you avoid the use of expensive third-party software tools that can be difficult to update or modify.
  • Design Environment - AutoCAD 2007 introduces the new design dashboard, which integrates all the tools focused on solid and surface modeling into a single place, and enables you to see at a glance the tools and workflow available in AutoCAD software. AutoCAD 2007 also takes the intuitive, grip-based editing features introducted for drafting in previous versions of AutoCAD (such as Dynamic Input, Ortho, and Tracking) and integrates them into solid and surface modelling. Quickly create and edit solid and surface models without going through any extended learning or relearning. A common set of editng tools means that no retraining is required to edit solids as opposed to lines, arcs, and circles, increasing speed and decreasing the training time required to be productive.
  • Model Navigation - AutoCAD 2007 expands existing tools by allowing transparent pan or zoom while in perspective mode, and by allowing editing during use of the Orbit command. It also introduces several new tools such as a walk mode that enables you to walk through your model in the intuitive manner used in computer games. There is also a new camera function that enables you to quickly take a snapshot of how your design will look from a particular point of view in the design. These improved navigation tools make you more productive, because they encourage interaction with your models during creation and editing. They also enable you to more easily explore and understand your own designs. This capability makes it easier to evaluate design alternaitves, uncover flaws early in the design process, and explain your design choices quickly and effienctly to others during and after the design process.

Visualise your ideas with lighting effects, materials libraries, walk-through animations, and stunning rendering capabilities.

  • Visual Styles - The AutoCAD 2007 Visual Styles tools relate to all elements associated with the AutoCAD 3D display, including the creation of new face styles, edge line effects, materials display, shadow display, lighting display, and perspective and parallel/orthographic views. These new tools make it easy to create Visual Styles that fit all aspects of your design and creation needs, including the style that best represents the current stage of your design. This capability enables you to clearly communicate your vision to the client without having to learn or puchase additional software tools.
  • Animations - Using the AutoCAD 2007 Walk and Path animation tools, you can identify points of interest within a model, and then create a path, or simply walk past those points to create an animation file that can be distributed. Create the animation using different visual styles or shademodes to get just the right visual effect. Use these tools dynamically to take the client on an over the shoulder tour of the design. And best of all, you can expose any flaws early in the design process, well before any problems occur in the final product.
  • Rendering - AutoCAD 2007 incorporates the mental ray rendering engine, the very latest in rendering technology. This powerful techology, used in Autodesk 3ds Max software, has been incorporated into a new user interface focused on making accurate and realistic renderings quickly and easily. This technology includes the use of preset renderings, as well as slider control that allows easy trade-off of time versus rendering quality. The new rendering, materials, and lighting enhancements make highly accurate rendered images available to any AutoCAD user, enabling you to achieve effects that previously required additional applications.
  • Lights - The new interactive light tool in AutoCAD 2007 enables you to quickly and accurately place distance, point, and spot lights in a drawing. Once you have placed the light, you can use the light target grips to shine it precisely where you want. The effect of lights on shadows are shown in real time as you place the lights, with no need to render the image first, giving you more time to find the rendering that most accurately conveys your design intent.
  • Materials - With AutoCAD 2007 applying materials to a model is as easy as applying hatch patterns to a 2D block. Drag materials from a predefined library onto any solid face or surface defined in your model, and the material scales automatically with no need to manually adjust its scaling parameters based on the size of the model. And if the material library does not have the proper materials, just edit the material and create your own customised library using the new materials editorall without having to use any third-party software.

Document your design quickly and easily with sectioning and flattening tools, dynamic blocks, and enhanced tables to create clear and accurate sets of construction documents.

  • Section and Flatten - In AutoCAD 2007, the new section and flatten tools enable you to quickly and easily extract drawing information from your conceptual model. The section tools allow the movement of a dynamic, adjustable plane through the solid or surface model. This cutting plane can be used to create an elevation or plan view that is ready to be dimensioned and annotated as part of the drawing creation process. The flatten tool allows the 3D model to be automatically compressed down to a 2D illustration. By avoiding the need to re-create model information for the design document package, you save time and money and reduce errors caused by manual re-creation.
  • Dynamic Blocks - AutoCAD 2006 made blocks dynamic. With block authoring tools, you can add dynamic behavior to your existing block librariessimplifying block complexity and reducing the time spent manipulating blocks in a drawing. The Dynamic Block authoring environment provides an easy, graphical way of creating Dynamic Blocks from your existing block libraries. It does not require any programming experience. Use the new Block Authoring palette to add parameters and actions by dragging them directly onto the block. To help you realize the power of Dynamic Blocks, AutoCAD 2007 includes sample Dynamic Blocks with tutorials designed to teach you how to create and use them. Convert your existing block libraries into Dynamic Blocks and start using Dynamic Blocks at your own speed with the standards and conventions appropriate to your company and work practices.
  • Tables - The Table command developed for AutoCAD 2006 streamlined the process of creating tables and controlling their properties so table content, not table creation, was the focus. You can predefine table styles that control elements such as border properties (grid visibility, lineweight, and colour), cell properties (text style, height, colour alignment, and background fill), the location of headings, and more. You can also use an existing table style to create new tables that inherit all the defined style properties. Change any property of any table element or apply a new table style in seconds.

Share design information across extended teams with powerful tools for exchanging data

  • DWF as an Underlay - AutoCAD 2007 introduces the ability to import a DWF file as an underlay/reference. This means that you can use the information as the basis for creating new drawings, but the information in those drawings cannot be altered. Using a DWF file as an underlay helps you to maintain the visual and data fidelity of your drawings when working with other members of the design team. It also offers the other benefits of DWF versus DWG format, such as a more compact file size, the ability to redline and mark up the file, and the association of metadata.
  • Publishing to the Adobe PDF Format - AutoCAD 2007 now has the ability to publish drawings in the Adobe PDF file format. Having the ability to publish to PDF means you no longer need to purchase and learn a third-party application to publish DWG files to PDF format.
  • Migration Tools Make It an Easy Trip - AutoCAD 2007 has been developed with effortless integration in mind, enabling you to easily upgrade while preserving customisation and allowing smooth incorporation into current work practices. Losing customised menus, toolbars, or other customisations through migration is a thing of the past with AutoCAD 2007. A new, automated method of reading in existing customized menus, workspaces, toolbars, hatch patterns, linetypes, and the acad.pgp file ensures their transfer into AutoCAD 2007. The new CUI format introduced in AutoCAD 2006 now makes migration even easier because of its ability to automatically read your customisations and version information. And that also means that moving to future releases of AutoCAD will be entirely automated, eliminating the need to hand edit files. AutoCAD 2007 helps to ensure that the workspace you worked hard to get just right moves with you.
  • DWG Format- The AutoCAD 2007 DWG file format has been updated and is different from the 2004/2005/2006 DWG file format. This new format is also used in the latest releases of the Autodesk industry-specific products such as Autodesk Architectural Desktop, Autodesk Map 3D, Autodesk Civil 3D, AutoCAD Electrical, and AutoCAD Mechanical. Nonetheless, you can still easily share files between design teams using any previous version of AutoCAD software. As in the past, this version of AutoCAD opens DWG files from all earlier DWG versions of the software created by any Autodesk product. AutoCAD 2007 has a built-in SaveAs function so you can save and safely round-trip drawings to and from AutoCAD releases using the 14, 2000, and 2004 DWG formats. In addition, you can use the SaveAs AutoCAD Release 12 DXF command to support releases prior to AutoCAD Release 14.

Migrate easily with tools that help you upgrade while preserving customization of toolbars and menus.
