Serena PVCS Version Manager - Features

PVCS Version Manager organizes, manages, and protects software assets across distributed development teams. It combines ease of use with heavyweight capabilities such as enhanced security, web-based remote access, support for multiple platforms and IDEs, and centrally managed database archives.

PVCS Version Manager is deeply integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET and Eclipse IDEs, and supports pragmatic locking for parallel development. As part of the PVCS Professional Suite for software change and configuration management (SCCM), PVCS Version Manager integrates with Serena TeamTrack for sophisticated issue and workflow management and with Serena Builder for automated build management.

NEW Features in version 8 include:

  • LDAP Support: simplified configuration process to support multiple redundant LDAP servers or referrals with easy setup and configuration directly supported through the project configuration dialogue.
  • File Server-Based Protections: to avoid accidental or unauthorised modification or deletion of assets. Physically isolate project data from the end user by removing the need for end user file level access to the archives and meta-data. The client/server architecture and service manages the archive updates; it is the service not the individual user that requires the write access
  • Web Client Enhancements: improved parity between the Web and the desktop clients. The Web client includes:
    • Merant Merge tool for differencing and merging of files and revisions
    • Sort by a particular column of data in the Content pane such as Locked By or Date Checked In
    • List files recursively in the Content pane
    • Browse dialogue for selecting revisions, version labels and promotion groups to simplify completion of dialogue boxes
    • Launch a file for viewing or editing by clicking upon it in the Content pane.

Features include:

  • Protect multiple revisions of software using version labelling, promotion modelling and workspace management
  • Re-use code and use visual differencing with side-by-side graphical comparisons of revisions including n-way comparison and merge
  • Automatic branch and merge capability speeds complex development
  • Alerts are provided of conflicts that require manual resolution to prevent program logic errors
  • Automate common team development tasks to prevent human error
  • Trace, document and organise software changes
  • Engage in parallel development without jeopardising work
  • Promotion group organisation defines and manages permission for code modification as it progresses from one stage of development to the next
  • Version, inventory and archive virtually any kind of development asset including specifications, source code, development objects and documentation
  • User access is managed and tracked through all stages of development providing an audit trail of changes including the "who, what, when and why" of each revision
  • Scales and supports a wide variety of platforms, operating systems and development environments
  • A choice of interfaces including desktop, Web client, IDE client or command line is provided
  • Software assets are protected across multiple, nested projects, through multiple revisions, during complex parallel and concurrent development and across distributed and remote team members
  • Layers of security protect assets while enabling team members permissioned access from a range of clients and interfaces.
